The successful candidate for this position will be a 1099 contractor with Music Ministry International and be responsible for the following:

1. TITLE. Contemporary Protestant Worship Leader Pianist

2. SCOPE: The Protestant Worship Music Leader (Leader) leads a music worship team for the Protestant Community (PC) who will provide high quality musical worship for services and programs, promoting healthy spiritual growth and strengthening the military readiness of the 4th Fighter Wing. The Leader performs all duties included in this Job description (JOB DESCRIPTION) in cooperation with the PC Lead Chaplain, Protestant Community Coordinator (PCC), members of the PC, and all Chaplain Corps military, civilians, and music leaders. All duties and responsibilities are executed harmoniously among a staff and community with diverse faith and cultural backgrounds.


3.1 Documentation. The following items shall be submitted to ensure minimum requirements are met.

3.1.1. Resume documenting all required qualifications & capabilities.

3.1.2. Letters of Reference from at least three individuals who have worked with or supervised the applicant within the previous three years and can verify all required qualifications & capabilities.

3.1.3. Video Recording of the applicant leading music worship in a service.

3.2. Personal Interview. Applicant will be interviewed in person by the following team: Wing Chaplain,

Contracting Officer (CO), PC Lead Chaplain, Superintendent or NCOIC and Protestant Advisory Council (PAC) President.

3.3. Personal Audition. Applicant will audition in person with the interview team (see 3.2).

3.3.1. Applicant will prepare at least 3 selections to perform, singing and playing piano simultaneously, from a variety of music styles including but not limited to contemporary, gospel & traditional (hymns). If the applicant is proficient with a secondary instrument, one selection must be performed, singing, and playing the instrument simultaneously.

3.3.2. Applicant will demonstrate sight-reading capability by playing a selection provided by the interview committee at the time of the audition.

3.4. Qualification Requirements. The following elements will be assessed by the interview team (see 3.2) to determine a match for the position.

3.4.1 Musical Capability. Able to read & play sheet music. Able to play piano at a professional level (as determined by the interview team) reading sheet music. If able, play by ear, without sheet music. Able to sing at a professional level while playing piano (as determined by the interview team). Preference will be given to applicants with ability to play an additional instrument such as guitar, bass, percussion, etc.

3.4.2. Experience.  The candidate must have at least 2 years of verifiable experience leading worship music teams in churches.

3.4.3. Music Team Leadership. Able to select sheet music for a variety of instruments to include at least the following: Piano, Guitar, Percussion (drums and other instruments), Vocals (all choral parts). Able to select sheet music for additional instruments using additional resources. Able to direct volunteer music worship team (amateur and trained) to play and sing together proficiently. Able to direct choirs of all ages to sing all vocal parts.

3.4.4 Music Style Proficiency. Proficiently play and lead the team to play Christian worship music to a variety of styles to including but not limited to contemporary, traditional (hymns) & gospel.

3.4.5. Physical Capability. Able to manipulate, transport and store all music equipment independently if needed and requesting additional support from community members when required.

3.4.6. Sound moral, ethical and legal background. Within 20 working days of awarded contract, undergo and receive no derogatory reports from a criminal background investigation.


4.1. Volunteer Recruiting, Training & Team Building.

4.1.1. Recruiting. Regularly recruit volunteer music worship team from the congregation and/or the base population. Within the first 6 months of service, create and maintain a volunteer team of at least 2 musicians and 2 vocalists at all times (in addition to the Leader)

4.1.2. Directing. Direct volunteer music worship team to perform & lead music proficiently, ensuring high quality music that enhances the worship service.

4.1.3. Team Building. Build a strong and positive community within a community of people from diverse denominational backgrounds. Build cohesion among the volunteer music worship team, providing an informal social event once per quarter (every 3 months). Resolve any relationship challenges on the team. If unable to resolve, bring to the attention of the PC Lead Chaplain for intervention & resolution.

4.2. Weekly Music Selection. Selects 3-4 congregational worship songs, acquiring sheet music for each musician and vocalist, including a variety of music styles including at least two of each: contemporary, gospel and traditional (hymns) for each Sunday Service. Ensure music is in a key comfortable for the congregation to sing.

4.3. Special Music Selections. At least one Sunday per quarter, direct special music selection performance (not for congregational singing). Utilizing as many volunteers as possible, rotate a variety of selections as follows:

-Solos/Duets/Trios- Must include at least one volunteer musician or vocalist and may include Leader.

-Choral Performances- Must rotate among age groups.

4.4. Seasonal Services. For each of the seasons below, coordinate with the PC Lead Chaplain and PC

Coordinator to plan/rehearse/lead unique, season-specific music programs for scheduled services celebrating the following:

-Paschal Season (Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Resurrection Sunday)

-Christmas (4 Sundays of Advent, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day)

-Thanksgiving Season

-Vacation Bible School (Music during opening and closing ceremonies for each day of VBS)

4.5. Musical Outreach Events. Plan and execute at least two additional worship music events at the chapel in

cooperation with local churches and/or other local musicians and vocalists.

4.6. Music Equipment. Ensure security, proper maintenance and operability of all music and AV equipment.

Ensure repair and/or purchase of new and replacement equipment as needed and approved by the PC Lead Chaplain. Ensures all payments are made in accordance with military regulations.

4.7. Audio-Visual (AV) Systems. Learn to properly operate and maintain the chapel AV hardware and software. Recruit and train volunteers to properly operate and maintain the chapel AV systems and software.  The music leader ensures that all visual presentations are prepared and display correctly for services requiring them.


5.1. In the event that the leader will be temporarily unable to fulfill duties, the Music leader shall procure a substitute. Substitutes must meet the same qualification requirements listed in this JOB DESCRIPTION and comply with all required regulations.

5.2. When leave of absence is planned and a substitute will be serving, the PC Lead Chaplain, Wing Chaplain and COR must be notified at least fourteen (14) days in advance. For emergency substitutions, the Music leader shall maintain at least one qualified substitute that can be provided on short notice.
