The successful candidate for this position will be a 1099 contractor with Music Ministry International and be responsible for the following:

  • 1.0    SCOPE OF WORK
    1. The music director shall provide musical leadership through song and/or instrument for the 5 pm Sunday Catholic Mass at Bethel Chapel or other assigned location.
  • 2.0    HOURS/UNITS OF WORK
    1.  Music director services will be provided during Catholic Masses/Services, normally one hour to ninety minutes in length.  Practice sessions/rehearsals will be held prior to each service at a time to be determined by the Music director, with the approval of the Catholic Priest/Chaplain.  Special Masses, services, and practices/rehearsals for those Masses and services, are in addition to the normal weekly work units.
  • 3.0    MUSIC DIRECTOR GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
    1. Music director shall perform for all regularly scheduled Masses or Services, choir rehearsals, rehearsals with the congregation, and additional services as requested by the Catholic Priest or Contract Officer, including, but not limited to, special chapel functions and other special services.
    2. Follow 633 ABW/HC operating instructions for use and care of buildings and equipment.
    3. The Music director is to coordinate all support requirements with the Catholic Priest or his designee.
    4. The Music director will personally perform the services described herein or  
    5. The Music director is responsible for paying any Social Security payments, Federal or local income taxes, and State unemployment insurance premiums for themselves, as well as for any individual employed or subcontracted by them to provide services under this contract.
  • 4.0    MUSIC DIRECTOR SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
    1. Select and prepare appropriate music approved by the Catholic Priest and by the Guidelines for Catholic Liturgical Music provided by the Catholic Priest.
    2. Prepare/conduct rehearsals for instrumentalists and singers for each service.
    3. Teach new music to the congregation before each service as directed by the Catholic Chaplain.
    4. Lead congregational singing, provide instrumental accompaniment, identify and train a cantor for leading the congregation in song and for singing the Responsorial Song and Gospel Acclamations.
    5. Recruit instrumentalists, choir members and cantors for the choir.
    6. Maintain communication with choir members, instrumentalists, and the Catholic Priest, as well as with the priest celebrant of the Mass.
    7. Attend quarterly, or more often if needed and requested, liturgical planning meetings.
    8. Work on this contract may require that the Music director have access to Privacy Information.  Music director Personnel shall adhere to the Privacy Act, Title 5 of the U.S. Code, Section 552a, and applicable agency rules and guidance.
  • 5.0    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER SIGNIFICANT QUALIFICATIONS:
    1. Have the ability to read and teach music.
    2. Possess accompanist ability on an instrument appropriate to Catholic liturgical settings (Masses, services, funerals, etc.)
    3. Ability to plan and select appropriate contemporary Catholic liturgical music within the guidelines provided by the Catholic Priest.
      1. Must have familiarity with the elements and flow (parts of the Mass) of Catholic Liturgy.
      2. Must be adaptable and willing to accept the supervision, guidance and decisions of the Catholic priest who is responsible for all aspects of the liturgy.
      3. Must have the ability to analyze Scriptural readings for themes and be willing to consult with the Catholic priest who determines the theme for the Mass and the homily at any given Mass or service.  (Ideally, the music selected should enhance and enrich the message of the Mass and homily.)
      4. Submission of a CCD representing the music that will be used at Mass and/or audition may be required.
    4. Must demonstrate proficiency in leading congregational singing.  Congregational singing is a priority at all Catholic Masses and Services.
    5. Must have the ability to recruit, organize, and lead a choir of volunteer singers, musicians, and cantors.
    6. Must have the ability to work with other song leaders in liturgical coordination.
    7. Must have the ability to regulate the sound system.
    8. Music director should have a basic understanding of military protocol and possess the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse congregation.
    9. Music director is required to dress appropriately (as directed by the Catholic priest) for a professional atmosphere.
    10. 5.10Music director will require all members of the choir, instrumentalists and cantors to dress appropriately as professionals and instruct the choir members regarding proper etiquette in a Catholic Mass or service (e.g., no gum chewing, no food or beverages in the sanctuary).
    11. 5.11Music director will submit to a proficiency demonstration for select Langley Chapel staffmembers.secure performance by a submusic director of equal or higher proficiency who has been approved in advance by the Catholic Priest/Chaplain.  The music director is to submit the names and qualifications of the proposed submusic director.  Approval is to be sought at least fourteen (14) days prior to the absence. Submusic directors must meet the requirements of the position outlined in the Statement of Work (SOW). The Coordinator is responsible for payment of the submusic director.

5.12 Music director will provide a resume that includes the following:

    5.12.1 A minimum of three years’ experience regularly playing piano and pipe    organ in Sunday Roman Catholic Mass Liturgies.

    5.12.2 At least one year experience playing pipe organ for Roman Catholic Mass.

    5.12.3 Three letters of recommendation which include contact information for verification of required experience, and recognized as being a Roman Catholic in good standing authorized to lead music during worship. Letters of recommendation must come from Parish Priest and coincide with the experience listed above.
