Music Director


The successful candidate for this position will be a 1099 contractor with Music Ministry International and be responsible for the following:

Titles. Music Director and Accompanist for the Ramstein Air Base Sunday 1700 Catholic Mass Life Teen music program here in called “Music Director.” Consults, coordinates with and is monitored by the Resources and Requirements Branch Chief or designee here in called “Branch Chief” and the Senior Catholic Chaplain here in called “Chaplain.”

2. Scope of Responsibilities. Serves as Music Director providing the music activities for the Ramstein Community. The music director shall provide labor and management to support the responsibilities outlined within this PWS. Directorship includes, but is not limited to training, scheduling, leading, and processing music for liturgies within the Sunday 1700 Catholic Mass.

2.1. Directorship/Accompanist abilities shall be required for rehearsals, Mass, and special services.

2.1.1. Special services include but are not limited to: Memorial services, Funeral services, combined services, faith specific holidays, and occasional support for special events.

2. Education and Experience. Music Director shall:

3.1. Have 2 or more years of college in music (or related field), or equivalent years of related experience in a chapel/church setting.

3.2. Possess the ability to skillfully play a lead instrument (i.e. piano or acoustic guitar) and sing while leading choir and congregation in worship.

3.3. Be able to sight read and interpret vocal and instrumental scores to include Gregorian Chant, traditional hymns, special solo music, and also appropriate contemporary music.

3.4. Select and present music in keeping with the liturgical norms of the Roman Catholic Church.

3.2.1 Demonstrate a comprehension of the Catholic Faith and its Liturgical needs and practices, as articulated by the documents of the Second Vatican Council, papal pronouncements, and subsequent statements of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

3.2.1 Possess the ability to develop and maintain a healthy and positive relationship with volunteers and teenagers.

3.5. Be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English in order to perform all responsibilities outlined within the PWS.

4. General Responsibilities. Music Director shall:

4.1. Accomplish the day-to-day coordination for the Life Teen program.

4.2. Have overall responsibility for and recruit volunteers.

4.3. Provide music and choir direction weekly for the Sunday 1700 Catholic Mass at Ramstein Air Base Chapel.

4.3.1. Lead the choir and play lead instrument (i.e. piano or acoustic guitar) for congregational singing.

4.4. Direct and provide musical support for a minimum of 1 rehearsal and 1 Mass per week.

4.4.1. Perform for additional rehearsals, Mass, and special services as required.

4.5. Collaborate all musical selections with the Chaplain and musician.

4.6. Coordinate all support requirements with the Chaplain or a designated representative.

4.7. Assist the Chaplain or designated representative in developing the following in regards to music director programs as appropriate: annual calendar of events, Chapel tithes and offerings fund budget, appropriated fund budget, and core volunteer training requirements.

4.7.1. Submit a written flexible annual plan for music programs and events covering the Liturgical Year including Holy Days and special celebrations (Note: This can be done in installments but shall be submitted to the Chaplain no less than 4 weeks in advance of the first day of the season or period in question.). The plan shall be coordinated with the Chaplain; however, the final approval authority rests with the Chaplain.

4.8. Return any and all government owned music scores and equipment obtained in the performance of the required duties following the last service provided under the contract.

4.7. Not engage in the unauthorized duplication of copyrighted materials by photocopying or any other means that would expose the government to liability for penalties under existing or future copyright laws.

4.8. Provide a replacement as necessary to ensure 100% coverage for all responsibilities listed within this PWS. The replacement shall meet or exceed the qualifications of the Music Director. This shall be coordinated with and approved by the Chaplain and the Branch Chief at least 14 days prior to the start of performance by the approved replacement. Approval of a replacement will be handled on a case by case basis.

5. Specific Responsibilities. Music Director shall:

5.1. Arrive at least 60 minutes prior to the beginning of worship services and special services, and 15 minutes prior to the beginning of each rehearsal.

5.2. Submit purchase/repair requests as needed for support of the music program to the Chaplain or his/her designated representative.

5.3. Be accountable for opening, restoring to its neutral setting, cleaning, and securing any facilities used for music events, rehearsals, worship services, or special services.

5.4. Provide Audio/Visual (A/V) lyrics (e.g. PowerPoint slides) for all services as required.

5.5. Maintain a professional attitude and environment to include hygiene and appearance.

5.6. Select and present choral music in keeping with the liturgical norms of the Roman Catholic Church.

5.7. Provide for cantor support as necessary per the specific faith group.

5.8. Attend any meetings identified by the Chaplain or their designee.

6. Criminal History Background Check. Music Director shall:

6.1. Submit completed background check applications to the Chaplain Corps background check program manager for processing. It is mandatory that all Music Directors working with children under the age of eighteen (18) undergo a background check investigation in compliance with DoDI 1402.5, 

Interested Candidates are requested to forward their resume together with three references from individuals who can attest to the candidate’s good work and steadiness.  Candidates who do not possess the qualifications in "2. Education and Experience" above need not apply.  This is a part-time position with compensation based on budget and the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications.
