The successful candidate for this position will be a 1099 musician with Music Ministry International and be responsible for the following:

INTRODUCTION:

Provide an organist for musical accompaniment on the organ for congregations, choirs, ensembles, cantors, and soloists, both vocal and instrumental IAW music selections provided by the Catholic chaplain or his designated representative.

Coordinate with the priest-celebrant, music director or cantor as appropriate, and adjust tempo and style of accompaniment as required. Attend musician rehearsals, liturgies and special programs as directed by the Catholic chaplain or his designated representative.

The musician shall be present at least 30 minutes prior to each Mass/liturgy and 15 minutes before each rehearsal. The musician shall monitor all musical instruments used by the musician and report requirements for repair or replacement to the Catholic chaplain or his designated representative.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Satisfy the Catholic Supervisory Chaplain through musical audition/tryouts on the organ to verify expertise necessary to supply the appropriate level of integrated liturgical music within the liturgical parts of the Catholic Mass and other liturgical celebrations.

The musician shall provide a work force possessing the skills, knowledge, and training to satisfactorily perform the services required by this contract. Personnel performing work under this work statement shall not be considered employees of the Government. 

Be a person of faith, committed to the health of the community and familiar with catholic tradition and practice. This position requires maturity, responsibility, integrity, flexibility, interpersonal communication skills, organization and management skills.

Should have personal experience with the military culture and ministry in a multi-combinational and interfaith community ensuring a strong ability to understand the life of military personnel who are subject to deployment, family, separation, frequent moves and stationing in foreign countries. If experiences with a military chapel do not exist musician must be willing to learn those unique characteristics of the military chapel community.

Be able to read and play music from the Armed Forces Hymnal, the Breaking Bread Hymnal, other Catholic hymnals and other forms of sacred music.

Have an in-depth understanding of the liturgical laws and directives concerning music and liturgy according to the Catholic Roman Rite. Musician must also demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the church documents concerning liturgical environment and the faith tradition concerning the Proper Seasons of worship and substantial experience adapting andimplementing these requirements to local circumstances.

Demonstrated expertise and experience in the utilization of Catholic liturgical music to enhance and supplement the specific Catholic prayerful environment. Ability to edit and/or transpose written music to meet the experience level of the supporting cantors and choir.

Knowledge and experience in the customs and practices of the Catholic faith tradition in its liturgical worship style. This includes detailed knowledge of Holy Week, Christmas, Easter, Funerals and other principal liturgies.

Demonstrated expertise in the selection of Catholic Liturgical music to accommodate seasons, celebrants, and other variables to create a complete worship experience under the direction of the Parish Music Director.

HOURS OF OPERATION/PLACE OF PERFORMANCE:

The Musician must at all times maintain continuity and the uninterrupted performance of all tasks defined within this job description. General hours of operation will be Saturdays from 1700-1800 and Sundays from 0730 to 0830 and 0915 to 1015 for Worship Services. Rehearsals will be Sunday from 0815-0915. Place of performance will be Woodlawn Chapel on Fort Belvoir unless otherwise specified.
